Rogue Farms Closed By More Floods

This is the El Nino that keeps on giving.

We’re expecting another day of heavy rains, then a new winter storm rolls into the area Saturday evening. The Willamette River is swelling like an over inflated water balloon. We’re waiting for it to burst and send floodwaters pouring into the hopyard. The river will rise five feet by tonight.

For everyone’s safety, we closed Rogue Farms to the public. This morning’s flood forecast from the National Weather Service shows flooding at the farm for the next ten days. If these projections hold up, this will be our second worst flood in almost 20 years.

How To Read This Graph: The Red is the National Weather Service official flood stage. The orange line shows when we expect flooding at Rogue Farms. The line of diamonds below it shows you the average river level for this time of year.

Yesterday, we were busy moving anything we possibly could to higher ground. Machinery, tractors, picnic tables, umbrellas… you name it. We moved the Rogue Farms honeybees a second time even higher out of the flood plain. Don’t be surprised if the floodwaters are lapping up to the back deck of the Chatoe Rogue Tasting Room.

Please do not try to visit us until we’re officially reopen. The road may be passable this morning, but it could be covered in water at any moment. Winter floods and rains are good for our hops and our dirt, but they are also dangerous and need to be taken seriously.
